After we checked in at the Kona Royal Resort Hotel on the Big Island before noon, we ate lunch at a restaurant which is very close to our hotel. We ordered three dishes including the dish in the second picture. It is Locomoco, which is said to be one of the dishes native to Hawaiian cuisine. But surprisingly, it is an invention by a Japanese Hawaiian lady named Mrs. Inouye who lived in Hilo on the Big Island in the 1940's. There are many variations, but essentially the Locomoco consists of white rice topped with a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy. We ordered one Locomoco and shared it among the five of us. It was great.
We have had meals at Lu Lu's! The place can really get noisy at night...Sometimes we are in the mood for a late night drink and actually enjoy the noisy atmosphere. And, we have had Locomoco too! It's actually pretty good. I hadn't thought of that dish for quite some time. Thank you for bringing back the memory!
