These photos were taken near the moat of the ruins of the Yatsushiro Castle, which is situated at the mouth of the Kuma River. The sea gulls in the first photo were out of focus. So I changed the aperture of the camera from 4 to 14 and the brightness in the second photo. What camera setting should I have used in shooting those photos?
I struggle with choosing camera settings too. If I am not rushed, I like to take the same shot changing the focal point and the settings numerous times. Then I evaluate once the image is on the computer...sometimes I like more than one...sometimes one and sometimes none of them. I don't think there is a hard rule...you, being the artist, must decide.

I like the first photo with the clear focus on the children with the gulls slightly blurred...I like that. I also like the clearest focus on the hand feeding the closest gull in the second. You can up the light slightly in Photoshop too...I think you came out with 2 very nice shots!
