These are not photos of a campfire, but of "dondo-ya" which is a kind of fire festival held throughout Japan around January 15. It is said that originally people burned the New Year's decorations which they brought from their homes to a place like a shrine as a beacon fire to send off the god of the year. Today we have the custom of roasting rice cakes on this bonfire because it is believed that anyone who eats rice cakes roasted on the bonfire will be lucky and healthy during the coming year. In the last photo, I should have captured children's facial expressions more clearly.
I can't help but notice how the children are dressed in jackets for cold weather. But, one boy has on short sleeves and short pants! Just like America! We would most likely see the same here...someone insisting it's not cold. I love these colorful photos.
