Peace Message and Omikuji

In the precinct of a Shinto shrine in Kuma County, where my wife and I visited on a day tour last Saturday, stands this little monument. It has a peace message written in both Japanese and English. If you take a closer look at the picture, the monument stands by the bush to which omikuji are attached. Omikuji are random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines in Japan. It predicts the worshippers' chances of their hopes coming true, of finding a good match, or generally matters of health, fortune, life, etc. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the omikuji and attach it to a tree in the shrine grounds. As you see, a lot of omikuji are tied to the bush. It looks like that many worshippers might have drawn omikuji with bad predictions.
