January 11 is the Coming of the Age Day, which celebrates men and women who turn 20 during the year. It is one of the national holidays in Japan. The event often doubles as a great opportunity for them to catch up with old friends. When I arrived at the place of the ceremony, it looked like a reunion. They were all dressed up, chatting, laughing, taking photos with each other. Almost all women were wearing gorgeous kimono which must have cost them anarm and a leg. While photographing, I noticed a woman who was wearing boots instead of the usual footwears for kimono. Her kimono is also different from an ordinary one. Her style seemed to be a combination of West and East. Is Kimono becoming international!?
I love seeing all of the colorful kimonos in these photos. Japan has such nice traditions.
