Mikoshi is a portable Shinto shrine which is taken out and paraded through the streets of the town during a shrine festival. The spirit of the local deity is said to come down and reside in the mikoshi during the proceession. It is said that this practice originally started about a century ago to pacify malevolent spirits which were believed to cause epidemics.
This picture was taken on the evening of the Lantern Festival in Yamaga. This mikoshi is accompanied by a taiko drummer and two bamboo flute players besides about 20 or so people who carry it on their shoulders.
