Now we have been celebrating Bon Festival for these three days. Last night I went to take pictures of a bon dance in our city.During Bon Festival all over Japan, we can see people dancing in colorful yukata, the informal kimono for summer wear. They dance outdoors with musical accompaniment in circles around a platform till late at night. The costume of the dance in our city is unique. It reminds us of the deceased, whose spirits are supposed to come home for a short visit during the Bon Festival. This dance is not accompanied by music but chants and its unique elegance of movement resembles kyobu, a dance in Kyoto. It is said that it dates back from the early Yedo period and it is one of the cultural properties of Kumamoto prefecture.
