These photos were taken at a compound of 150 old Samurai residences in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is one of the old residences of the Samurai family which are still preserved in many places all over Japan. It is said that this compound was originally built about 400 years ago and it took about 30 years to complete. The residences are still used and some of them are open to the public as a tourist attraction. In the third photo, you can see a set of Samurai armor placed in the tokonoma which is an elevated alcove in a traditional Japanese room.
These are the images in my mind of Japan. The sliding doors and tatami mats on the floors, dark exterior wood...so beautiful.
