Scenes in Aso

May 5th is Children's Day in Japan. Families with a new-born baby boy fly carp streamers outdoors for the day because the carp is thought to be a lucky fish symbolizing success in life. The day when I visited Aso, many carp streamers were waving against the blue sky in the spring wind.

The lines in the meadow in the second picture were made by cows because they walked and grazed grass there for many years. The paths created by cows look like artificially-made patterns. They are now clearly seen because meadows are burned off for fresh grass at this time of year.

  1. It's amazing how cows tend to follow the same path over and over. What an interesting terraced pattern they have created.
